Emergency Crews Respond To Deadly Bus Fire In Switzerland

At least six people were killed and several others injured after a passenger bus caught fire in the town of Kerzers in western Switzerland on Tuesday evening. Authorities confirmed that emergency services rushed to the scene, but the vehicle was already engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

The incident occurred around 6:25 p.m. local time on a main street in Kerzers, about 20–25 kilometres west of the Swiss capital Bern. According to police, the fire spread rapidly through the bus, trapping several passengers inside before they could escape.

Officials said at least six people died, while five others were injured, including three who suffered serious injuries and were transported to hospital by ambulance and helicopter. Two additional people were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The bus involved in the incident was part of the regional PostBus public transport network, which operates across rural areas of Switzerland and connects smaller towns with major cities. The vehicle was almost completely destroyed by the fire.

Police from the Fribourg canton have launched a criminal investigation to determine the exact cause of the blaze. Authorities said early evidence suggests the fire may have been started deliberately, although investigators have not confirmed the exact circumstances.

Witness accounts and preliminary information indicated that a passenger might have triggered the fire inside the bus, but police said they are still examining evidence and interviewing witnesses. Officials also stressed that there is no confirmation of terrorism at this stage.

Emergency crews, firefighters, and police officers quickly cordoned off the area as rescue and recovery operations continued late into the night. Authorities also urged the public to avoid the location while investigators worked at the scene.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin expressed condolences to the families of the victims and thanked emergency responders for their efforts following the tragedy. Officials said identifying the victims could take several days as investigations continue.

The deadly bus fire has shocked the quiet Swiss town of Kerzers and raised questions about safety on public transport. Authorities said more details will be released once the investigation progresses.
