Severe Storm in NSW Topples Crane in Dubbo, Forcing Mass Evacuations

Collapsed crane in Dubbo CBD after severe storm

Wild footage of a towering construction crane being violently twisted and collapsing during a severe storm in Dubbo, New South Wales has been widely shared online, leaving residents and emergency responders alike stunned. The dramatic visuals show how ferocious wind gusts assaulted the crane before it disintegrated, its heavy debris crashing onto the street below.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with sudden loud crashes and dust rising as the crane gave way. Fortunately, the crane operator β€” a woman on site at the time β€” escaped without injury, a fact emergency officials have repeatedly emphasized as a major relief given the intensity of the collapse.

Almost immediately after the collapse, police and fire crews moved to evacuate several nearby buildings near Church Street and Macquarie Street in central Dubbo. Nearby roads β€” including Bligh, Wingewarra, Church, Macquarie, and Talbragar Streets β€” were closed to protect residents and allow ambulance and fire units clear access to the scene.

Four ambulance crews were dispatched as a precaution, though there were no reported injuries beyond the operator β€” a fortunate outcome according to officials working in dangerous weather conditions.

Local authorities urged the public to stay clear of the crane site while structural assessments continue. Traffic disruptions and emergency cordons remain in place as teams work to stabilize the area.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued severe thunderstorm and damaging wind warnings for large portions of New South Wales, including the Central Tablelands and North West Slopes. These alerts warn that similar blasts of high‑speed wind and heavy rain could cause additional disruptions across the state.

Meteorologists noted that such intensified storm cells can form suddenly, giving little time for preparation β€” underscoring the importance of staying informed via official weather channels and taking precautions when warnings are issued.
