Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with sudden loud crashes and dust rising as the crane gave way. Fortunately, the crane operator β a woman on site at the time β escaped without injury, a fact emergency officials have repeatedly emphasized as a major relief given the intensity of the collapse.
Almost immediately after the collapse, police and fire crews moved to evacuate several nearby buildings near Church Street and Macquarie Street in central Dubbo.
