Authorities in the US state of Michigan were working on Monday to clear major roadways after a multi-vehicle crash involving around 100 vehicles occurred on snow-covered highways, leaving several people injured.
The crash took place along the I-196 corridor, where 30 to 40 semi-trucks were among the vehicles involved. Michigan State Police said multiple injuries were reported, but none were believed to be fatal. Many vehicles slid off the road as poor visibility and icy conditions made driving extremely dangerous.
The interstate remained closed for hours as emergency crews responded to the scene, removed wrecked vehicles and assisted stranded motorists. Officials described the road conditions as βtreacherousβ and urged drivers to slow down or avoid travel altogether.
A powerful winter storm continued to impact the region, with temperatures expected to drop to minus 8 degrees Fahrenheit (-22Β°C) when wind chill is factored in.
The National Weather Service (NWS) warned that additional snowfall and blowing snow were expected overnight, with accumulations of up to four inches, bringing total snowfall in parts of southwest and west-central Michigan to as much as 14 inches (35.5 cm).
βTravel is not recommended in the area,β the NWS said, as authorities remained on high alert for further weather-related incidents.
