Firefighters battled a major blaze in Karachi, Pakistanβs largest city, that has killed six people and destroyed parts of a historic downtown shopping mall.
The fire erupted on Saturday night, with emergency services receiving a report at 10:38 pm (1738 GMT) that shops on the ground floor of Gul Plaza were ablaze. Videos from the scene showed towering flames as firefighters worked through the night to prevent the fire from spreading further in the densely populated business district.
βWhen we arrived, the fire had already spread from the ground floor to the upper floors, and almost the entire building was engulfed in flames,β said Hassanul Haseeb Khan, a spokesperson for Rescue 1122.
Authorities continue to assess the damage and investigate the cause of the fire, while emergency services remain on high alert in the area to prevent further incidents.
